What Does Acyclovir Treat?

Acyclovir mainly treats herpes simplex virus infections, shingles, and chickenpox. However, your doctor may prescribe it for other uses. These may include preventing cytomegalovirus infections after organ transplant.

Missed Dose/Overdose

Take the medicine immediately when you remember. However, skip the missed dose if it’s almost time for your next dose. Do not take double doses at one time. In case of an overdose, seek emergency medical assistance.

What to Avoid While Taking Acyclovir

Please avoid the following while taking acyclovir:

• Chewing gum, brushing teeth, or wearing an upper denture while a buccal tablet is in your mouth. Drinking plenty of liquids can help prevent dry mouth.
• Letting infected areas come into contact with other people. Or, touching an infected area and then touching your eyes. Herpes infections are contagious; you can still infect people even while taking acyclovir.

Important: Wash your hands frequently to prevent passing the infections to others.

• Sexual intercourse while you have active lesions or the first symptoms of an outbreak. Taking acyclovir does not keep you from passing genital herpes to your sexual partner.

Acyclovir Warnings & Precautions

People who are allergic to any of these medicines should not take acyclovir:

• Valacyclovir
• Acyclovir
• Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

Your healthcare provider can tell you all of the ingredients in the specific acyclovir products they have. Ensure that your doctor or pharmacist knows of all your allergies, medical conditions, and medicines you use.

Before Taking this Medicine

To be safe, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had:

What Are the Acyclovir Side Effects?

The following are the most commonly repeated issues. Tell your doctor if any of them bother you:

• Nausea
• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Unusually tired or a general feeling of being unwell
• Itching, pain, redness, or swelling near the injection spot
• Hives (injection)

Stop taking acyclovir and call your healthcare provider immediately if you have any of these severe side effects:

• Severe allergic reactions. Symptoms may include a racing heart, swollen lymph nodes, trouble swallowing, and fainting.
